In Memoriam, Rodney F.W. Coates, Fellow, IEEE

Dr. Rodney Coates, Fellow of IEEE and member of the Oceanic Engineering Society, died at his home in Anglesey, Wales, at age 69 after an extended battle with cancer on December 29, 2013. Professor Coates retired from University of Birmingham as Professor of Acoustical Oceanography in 1995. Until his death he provided technical training and lectures in underwater acoustics through his technical training company, Seiche Ltd. He was elevated to IEEE Fellow 1 January 2009, with the following citation: "for contributions to underwater acoustics education".

Coates was an avid fisherman as well as an acoustician concerned with the effect of noise on marine organisms from whales to fish. His courses offered through Seiche Ltd. addressed this noise both as it informed practitioners in military and environmental agencies and provided tools to measure and understand the underwater acoustic environment. He was passionate about these issues. Serving with him on committees I grew to understand his passion, most recently addressing the need to define frequency nomenclature for underwater acoustics where the terms low frequency, high frequency and ultrasonic frequency do not carry the same standardization of frequency ranges as in radio.

Rodney Coates leaves his wife, Gillian, his two married children, Damion and Shana, grandchildren, and his brother, Lionel. Donations may be made to Marie Curie Cancer Care and Sea Watch Foundation c/o the Funeral Director Melvin Rowlands, Minafon, Church Street, Llangefni, Anglesey, LL77 7DU.

  • New IEEE/OES Earthzine on-line publication

The OES has a new on line publication. Earthzine is an on-line, open access publication that serves as an outreach media for the Earth observing community, IEEE, and now the OES. Earthzine's archive contains an eclectic collection of articles that aim to create greater awareness by sharing information across the international and interdisciplinary community of Earth observers.

Do you know when the moon is full? Subscribe to our Full Moon Newsletter, which is emailed at the time the moon is full, and you will know. The newsletter contains summaries of recently published articles and announcements on upcoming projects. It's a great resource to find out what's happening within the Earth observing community, and completely free! http://www.earthzine.org/subscribe-to-our-newsletter/

    GEO Appathon starts May 7 - Aug. 31, 2014

Announcing the launch of the first Group on Earth Observations GEO Appathon 2014 - an exciting new worldwide data science competition to be launched on 7 May 2014. See www.geoappathon.org. The GEO Appathon is a global applications (App) development competition that aims to develop new, exciting and - most importantly - useful Apps using Earth observation data from the open and expansive Earth Observation data sets in the GEOSS Common Infrastructure (GCI). See www.geoportal.org. The Appathon kicks off on 7 May 2014 and runs until 31 August 2014. Participation is open to any non-commercial entity, individual or team from any background in any country. Apps can be created for any of the main operating systems, and can be designed for any type of portable device. All Apps will be judged and the top three winners will receive a cash prize and a year-long GEO network endorsement and publicity for the App. Visit our GEO Appathon website (www.geoappathon.org) for more rules, details of how to register and information about how you can help us unleash the power of Earth observation data. We encourage students, scientists and developers to join us and create the next game-changing solution using Earth observation data. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email Dan Williams at: dan@geoappathon.org.
